Sometimes a song takes months to write, sometimes it takes 5 minutes, this song is like that! I always love it when that happens, helps my insecurities shut up for a second and lets me enjoy the flow of a new song! This song is inspired by the story of Jesus asleep in the boat.
I recently had pleasure of hearing Jason Upton preach on anxiety, worry and fear. He referenced the story of Jesus sleeping in the boat and the story of Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemene to show a parallel of the practice of prayer. In the first story, Jesus was in the boat asleep and the disciples were freaking out, whereas, in Gethsemane Jesus was in the garden awake and his disciples couldn't stay awake to pray with him for even an hour. Jason spoke this statement: "Maybe we need to be awake to the things that really mattered to Jesus and asleep to the things that really didn't matter to Jesus."
My soul must have been ruminating on this for the last few weeks because this song was ready to be written! Hope its an encouragement to you!
I’ve been dreaming of open water
Where simple sails can find a home
I’ve been looking on the horizon
Where the sun goes to be alone
Don't be afraid of the things that come against you
Don’t be afraid of the wind and the storm and the waves
I am sleeping in stormy waters
When I am resting no ones going under
I’ve been speaking of kingdom come
Where sons and daughters can drown in love
Don’t be awake to the things that want to take you
Don’t be awake to the troubles that don’t have a say
