Look For The Light

Look For The Light

Everything was created through him;
    nothing—not one thing!—
    came into being without him.
What came into existence was Life,
    and the Life was Light to live by.
The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness;
    the darkness couldn’t put it out.

John 1: 3-5 (The Message)

Have the holidays snuck up on you? Are you feeling way behind like I am?  Are you late with Christmas cards, frantically buying gifts, scheduling the parties, trying to finish the dreaded Photobook you promise to make for the grandparents every year!  If this sounds familiar be encouraged, this too is my current list of obligations and pressures to perform.  Agreeing to be "handled" by these events and niceties is causing a gnawing feeling of inadequacy in me and I want off the ride.

There must be a better way.

The Holidays can be full of pressure so instead of feeling guilty and beating myself up for not having an epic Advent plan I am trying to give myself the gift of "presence" or observation this year.  So welcome to my journal for a real-time Advent, I will post a few reflections each week as we barrel towards Christmas, hopefully you will feel encouraged or at least not alone!

Week one: HOPE!  I am hoping to be present, to become the present, to present myself.

Presence.  I want to be present to the joy, the excitement, I want to take away ALL the pressure to perform for the holidays!  I am choosing to believe that during Advent the posture of waiting can open up opportunities of observation so I can see what is actually unfolding right in front of me. Our kids don't want to be in a pressure cooker of spoken and unspoken expectations, they want to experience Christmas with us, with our full attention and access to our hearts.  Isn't that the romance of Christmas; full attention, full hearts all fully engaged. You know what adults, moms and dads, we deserve a childlike, romantic Christmas just like that too!

The true reality of Christmas, and in fact, the whole universe is this, that LIFE came to the earth at and that LIFE is the LIGHT to live by!  An unstoppable, unquenchable Light, so this year our family is stopping to "Look for the light" during Advent!  Would you join us!

What came into existence was Life,
    and the Life was Light to live by.
The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness;
    the darkness couldn’t put it out.

So far here are some of the present and precious moments we have enjoyed:

- We have enjoyed dessert by candlelight.
- Each of our kids has new Christmas sheets and a small fake tree in their room, enjoying cozy moments with them reading in their beds by twinkle lights.
- Counting down the days until the days grow longer.
- Dollar Store ornaments
- Eating too many of my mother-in-laws home made Christmas cookies, and likely having to make more for our actual Christmas celebration.

Next week some reflections on tension and why it is absolutely appropriate to feel it at Christmas!
