How To Pick A Word For The Year

I have been picking a "word for the year" since 2013, which was the hands-down the worst year of my life so far (read more).  My word that year was resilient, and I literally clung to it to survive!  Short story, I was pregnant with a three year old, renovating our new house, in a new town when our entire town flooded and we lost everything.  I did not know it then, but that year I began a journey ordained to recovering my mental health and discovering personal worthiness.  Choosing a word helped me not to lose hope when things were/are really, really hard. Not all terrible years are meaningless experiments meant to hurl you into chaos and confusion. The bad years are doorways too!  Needless to say, taking time to listen and pray for my annual word is an extremely important practice for me!

Intrigued? Looking for some spiritual guidance for your year?  How do you even pick a word?  I have received my annual word in a variety of ways.  Sometimes I take a walk, pray, journal, or read past journals to help open my soul and allow for discernment.  There is, however, a big secret to finding your word.....you must trust yourself!  You have a pure, inner ability to discover what your soul is speaking, you just need the courage to take time and listen!  Trust me, I am my own worst enemy when trying to engage my soul spaces.  The dishes can wait, the  laundry can wait, the to do list must wait!

Once you receive your word celebrate it in some significant way, respond, honour and proclaim your word, make space for it and own it!  If we allow these words to speak they will share a quite confidence with us and allow us to face whatever the next 12 months hold!  These words will stick and stay with you, they may even frighten or intimidate you, but trust me, you will benefit deeply when giving them space in your heart and life. Lastly, dear friends, do NOT try to make sense of your word early on, right now it is too early on to have any sense or understanding of what that word might mean, just embrace it and enjoy it's company in your soul-journey!

My word for this year?  Awaken: rouse from sleep; cause to stop sleeping.
