Village Thrift was released in April of 2005. It was the first of its kind, and has occupied the unique positions as our only pop/electronic offering until 2016 when Ben Pasley and Karla Adolphe radically transformed the sound of Enter The Worship Circle. Collaborative songwriting and acoustic instrumentation is mashed with hip-hop and electronica to create an amazing atmosphere of meditations and prayers. The heart of the Psalmist is clearly seen in the abstracted simplicity of the song Be Still:

Be still and wait for God to come
Be still and wait for God to come
Please come and make it right
Why does evil feed on those who call you father
Will you please come, please come and make it right
Song: Be Still, Writer: Todd Berger

Sometimes the shortest path is the best path, and this is often true of songwriting, especially over pop rhythm beds. All of Psalm 37 contributes to this simple prayer, but verse 7 is the summary:

Be still in the presence of the Lord,
and wait patiently for him to act.
Don’t worry about evil people who prosper
or fret about their wicked schemes.
Psalm: 37:7, Writer: David
(Tyndale House Publishers. (2013). Holy Bible: New Living Translation.)

It is fair to say that it was musically ahead of its time, and absolutely deserves a fresh listen, but mostly because you will be singing bits of the Scripture all day long without even knowing it. What a great way to get the word of God into your head and your mouth! Buy it.

P.S. This album was imagined to be an ongoing urban-electronic offering, but no sequels were to follow, it was a bummer. In 2016 when Down Here and Up Above was released we had a serious“aha!” moment when we realized part of our redemptive story was in bringing this experiment back to new life! Loops are an incredible way to build a set of worship on a strong rhythm bed, and still create improvisational movements and spontaneous worship as long as they are a tool and not a musical trap … follow our new story to find out more as we tour the nation!
